What is the
best Sikkens product to use on my previously uncoated Cedar front or garage
door? |
|
|
The most commonly
used system for exterior dressed timber is 1 coat of Cetol HLS followed
by 2 coats of Cetol Filter 7. Click here for application

|
How long will
my Sikkens coating last? |
|
|
There are a number of factors which determine
the durability of any coating.
1. The species of timber. Some species are more stable than others.
2. The cut of the timber. Quarter sawn timber is much more stable than crown
cut timber and should be used in sunny exposed situations wherever possible.
3. The aspect. A north facing structure will suffer much more UV damage
than a south facing structure.
4. The situation. An exposed building site close to the sea will be subjected
to the abrasive effects of salt laden winds more so than a sheltered inland
site.
In the worst case the coating will require a maintenance coat after 1 year.
In the best case a maintenance coat may not be required for 8 years. |

My cedar door
has been previously coated with a penetrating oil. Can I apply Sikkens over
the old coating? |
|
|
Any previous coating must be completely removed
prior to coating with Sikkens. It may be possible to remove the oil residue
with Jac Jay Timber Revitaliser. Click
here for full details. |
|
|
Dust has settled
on my coating after applying the first coat. Can I sand between coats? |
|
|
Sanding should be
carried out with great care as any variation in coating thickness will present
itself as a colour variation and may look patchy. Use only fine sandpaper
such as 320 grit or finer. |

|
I really like
the look of my front door which is coated with Cetol HLS & Cetol Filter
7. Can I coat interior timber with the same system? |
|
|
Cetol Filter 7 is
a flexible coating designed to expand and contract with changes in heat.
It is not hard enough for use indoors. To achieve a similar appearance indoors
we recommend coating with Cetol HLS followed by Cetol TS Interior. Click
here for full details. |
|
|
I have stained
my outdoor furniture with Cetol HLS and the coating is still not dry after
two days. What is wrong? |
|
|
Teak and some other
hardwoods are naturally oily. These oils retard the drying of all surface
coatings and will also impair the adhesion of the coating. Oily timber should
be thoroughly degreased with Sikkens Oplosser prior to coating. Click
here for more information. High solids coatings such as Novatech are
more susceptible to this problem. |
|
|
There appears
to be 2 options for coating my cedar weatherboards. Either 3 coats of Cetol
HLS or 1 coat of Cetol HLS followed by 2 coats of Cetol Filter 7. Which
should I choose? |
|
|
If you intend to
maintain your coating before it breaks down we recommend the HLS/Filter
7 system as it looks better and lasts longer. If you don't intend to be
vigilant about maintenance then we suggest you use the HLS only system.
We recommend the HLS only system on band sawn weatherboards as they are
difficult to sand. |
